CONCEPT ART & ILLUSTRATION

Our 12-month Concept Art & Illustration diploma program is crafted for aspiring 2D artists and digital illustrators passionate about digital painting, character design, and visual storytelling in the games and entertainment design industries. Taught by industry professionals with real-world expertise, students gain hands-on experience in both the artistic and technical skills essential for creating compelling concept art and illustrations that shape imaginative worlds.
Whether you're aiming to design dynamic characters, develop atmospheric environment art, or dive into matte painting, this program begins with foundational drawing and illustration techniques, so no prior experience is required. Key skills such as environment design, composition, and Photoshop fundamentals are developed, helping students to craft an impressive portfolio by graduation.
POSSIBLE CAREER PATHS
- Concept Artist: Develops visual ideas for characters, environments, and props, creating the foundation for production based on creative direction.
- Digital Illustrator: Produces detailed artwork for games, books, films, and marketing, focusing on creativity and precision to meet project goals.
- Character Designer: Creates unique characters for games and films, ensuring they fit the story and are functional for production.
- Storyboard Artist: Outlines narrative flow through a sequence of drawings, guiding teams to align the creative vision with production.

CURRICULUM

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
The Concept Art & Illustration program consists of three terms conducted over one academic year, covering 21 modules. Classes include full-day and half-day sessions focused on software training, design principles, and project applications. The curriculum transitions from foundational concept art fundamentals to advanced digital painting and visual development, culminating in a polished portfolio that showcases your creative expertise.
CURRICULUM BREAKDOWN
You will build a foundation in concept art fundamentals, sketching, perspective, and digital artwork using Photoshop. Courses include storyboarding and introductory 3D modeling in Maya and ZBrush, allowing you to explore various digital tools for your creative projects.

Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau

Teo Chia Kai

Stanley, better known as Artgerm, is a Hong Kong-born illustrator, designer, concept artist, and co-founder of Imaginary Friends Studios, a globally renowned digital art studio that has worked with Capcom, DC Comics, Marvel, and other entertainment giants.
With formal training in graphic design and advertising, Stanley's art blends eastern and western styles, earning him a massive online following, including over 50 million views on his deviantART gallery.
Active in the international art community, Stanley has shared his passion at institutions and conferences worldwide and has been featured in top art publications like ImagineFX and Spectrum. Since 2013, he and his partners at IFS have collaborated with 3dsense Media School to run a full-time diploma course in Digital Design & Illustration.

Chia Kai graduated from NUS with a Master in Architecture. In 2017, he took a career switch into the illustration and concept art industry. Here at 3dsense, Chiakai brings with him his passion for digital illustration, he is instrumental in molding the next generation of CG Talents here at 3dsense.



Kai Lim

Kai’s deep-rooted passion for games and entertainment, nurtured from a childhood surrounded by toys, has driven his creative journey as an artist. Today, he thrives in an entertainment design studio, working on a wide range of projects, including graphic novels, concept art for films, animation, and games.
Being able to create alongside friends and colleagues he admires makes his work all the more fulfilling. While his craft is his greatest love, his fascination with giant, war-torn robots battling across distant galaxies comes in a close second, along with his unwavering love for a good cup of milk tea.

Chia Kai graduated from NUS with a Master in Architecture. In 2017, he took a career switch into the illustration and concept art industry. Here at 3dsense, Chiakai brings with him his passion for digital illustration, he is instrumental in molding the next generation of CG Talents here at 3dsense.



Kendrick Lim

Michael Rafanan

Kendrick Lim, also known as “kunkka,” is an illustrator, concept designer, and mentor. He began his creative journey in Tokyo as a game designer before returning to Singapore in 2005 to co-found Imaginary Friends Studios (IFS) with two partners. Their goal was to create a creative space for artists, by artists. Since then, IFS has become a recognized name in the entertainment and gaming industry, collaborating with major clients like Sony Online Entertainment, Capcom, Square-Enix, Ubisoft, and DC Comics.
Kunkka’s art is bold, gritty, and sensual, blending fantasy, contemporary themes, and cultural influences into a unique style that has gained a loyal following. He has made a significant impact in both the illustration and gaming worlds, particularly with his work for the popular game DOTA, where a character was named after him, solidifying his place in the hearts of millions of gaming fans worldwide.

Michael is a Creative Generalist who leans toward the CG & VFX side of production. He has also taken roles as a Designer, 2D Animation Supervisor & Short Film Director. With a background in Architecture & Interior Design, he worked with brands like Hermes Watches, DKNY, Estee Lauder, Robinsons & Marks and Spencer.
He started out as an independent artist creating diverse work from Pre-production art, Pre-viz, 2D/3D Animation & Effects, Rendering to Video Editing contributing to productions such as New Zealand’s Kiwi & Cat. His short films currently total to at least 15 million views, some of which were entered into notable film festivals.
